Description of the initiatives:
The competition was organized for high school students of the Secondary School No. 6 in Gdańsk. This is a public school offering rowing classes for both girls and boys. The school curriculum includes 10- hour rowing training per week. The students practise classical rowing discipline and dragon boats races.
The Dragon boat dragging was an event organized by the PE teachers of the school, with the help of a professional dragon boats coach. The event was held at a rowing marina near High School nr 6 in Gdansk. Until now it has not been a recurring event, however there are plans to make it cyclical, as it is very popular among the students because of its pageantry. There were about 25 participants (high school students, age group 16-19), however there can be more of them, it only increases the number of participating teams.
The sports discipline is similar to rope pulling, the difference is that it takes place on water and in a boat. Two teams consisting of 6 people each sit on the boat facing each other and at a signal start paddling, with the goal being to bring the boat a certain distance in one direction against the force of the opposite team.
The aim of the event was to promote this spectacular sport among young people in the school. There were posters advertising the event, also each teacher involved informed the students of the fore coming event. As the organizers also wanted to promote the sport outside the school there are photos on Facebook , on the school Internet website. and films picturing the event on YouTube
