Description of the initiatives:
Special School No. 1 in Gdansk Wrzeszcz is a public school for students with special educational needs. There are both mentally and multi-sensory impaired students. The school prepares students for the choice of the right profession or further educational path. The teaching profile includes both vocational classes educating in professions related to trade, catering and hotel management and mechanical-profile classes.
One of the events organized every year is the Day of Sport - a sport and recreation picnic, which takes place during the summer months at the school sports field. This year the event was held on June 1st 2015. About 50 students, aged 17-23 years took part, besides parents and school teachers of all the subjects..
The students had the opportunity to compete in the following disciplines:
steeplechase, darts, archery, table football and “speech competition”.
The aim of the event it to activate and engage the students with different physical and mental capabilities in physical activities and games. The teachers selected the tasks and sport disciplines taking into account different disabilities so that each student had the opportunity to participate.
Therefore the competition complied with the rules of equal opportunities, in accordance with the principle of fair play – each participating student, regardless of the limitations had a chance to show his/her skills and strengths.
The parents were involved in the preparation of the event (purchase of the awards from the sponsors’ funds), cheered the players, even helped children in “speech competition” games.
At the end of the event the volleyball match was played: teachers versus students. The catering grade students on their own prepared refreshments for participants, among others, fresh fruit juice.
All festival participants of the Day of Sport were rewarded with sweets.
The initiative had a strong integrative value, students, teachers and parents attended the event had fun together. The event had also an educational value (students of catering classes showed their cooking skills, promoted healthy nutrition) and social advantages (the students developed communication skills, ability to work in groups that fosters the sense of responsibility for themselves and others). Each student was appreciated and rewarded, which had a positive impact on building self-esteem and self-confidence.
Nice family atmosphere contributed to shaping a positive attitude towards physical activity.
