Description of the initiatives:
The main originator of the event is OSS (Upper-Secondary Sports Schools) located in the city of Gdańsk, which is a state educational institution comprised of two upper-secondary schools:
• No. 2 School of Sports Championship - designed to educate potential top-level volleyball players,
• No. 21 Secondary Sports School - designed for students interested in sports disciplines such as football, ice hockey, volleyball among other. Within the school there are also non-sports classes.
The project is organised in close cooperation with the volleyball sports club TREFL Gdańsk.
The happening took place on 1st June, 2015 in a sports hall belonging to the Municipal Sports and Leisure Centre located in a big residential area in the immediate proximity of the school and it was the first edition of the annual event addressed to upper-secondary students (16 - 19 year-olds). Approximately one hundred young people from the school and from the local community participated this year.
The main objectives of the initiative are:
• to promote the social integration by providing opportunities and encouragement for young people to get active,
• to offer a fun and supportive environment for practising sport,
• to increase the awareness of the importance of school sport.
In this year’s edition the aims were achieved through providing opportunities for young people to take part in volleyball practices held by professional coaches from the TREFL volleyball club, during which different volleyball techniques as well as exercise developing speed, endurance and physical coordination were being practised. Moreover, the school PE teacher conducted an integrated physical training. The participants took part in various individual, pair and team tasks. The students from sports classes (other than volleyball) leant the arcana of volleyball and tried to meet the challenge of a new sport. The students from non-sports classes and from the local community became aware of the fact that sport apart from being a source of great fun also constitutes a powerful character building element, teaches essential life skills both useful for your school performance and extremely valuable as far as your future career is concerned. The soft competences the young people practised included: readiness to take on challenges, responsibility, loyalty, team work, commitment, ability to obey fair play rules, healthy competition and respect to your opponent. It’s important to mention the resultant integration on both intra-school and local levels.
