Description of the initiatives:
The promoter of the "Star Player Cup" event is the School and Youth Brench of F.I.G.C. (Italian Football Game Federation)
The event is organised in cooperation with the Ministry of Education, Coca-Cola, UNICEF, CONI ( Italian National Olympic Committee), the National Football Professional League (representatives of football clubs), Football National Association (trade union association representing footballers ) and the Italian Federation for Disabled Sports (which deals with the promotion and spread of sports among the disabled.
The main aims of the event, which is addressed to upper secondary schools, are:
• To promote genuine school football whose main purposes are loyalty, respect of the rules and of the opponent, selflessness and team spirit.
• To connect sport activities to interpersonal and communication activities
The event has two different aspects: an athletic and a teaching one.
The confrontation, for each class taking part in the project, is based on sport (participation in a five players soccer tournament), and educational, through a journalistic competition.
Playing the match is only half of the athletic competition; in addition, students must organize a real editorial staff room, with the aim of creating editorial products of various kinds (a newspaper, a magazine, a brochure, a website).
The final score of the competition is the sum of the results of the sport match and the evaluation of the editorial product expressed by a jury of experts.
The tournament is divided into three phases:
- the first is intra-school, in a confrontation of classes in the same school;
- the second is municipal, providing direct confrontations between the best classes of each school in the same city;
- the third ends with a final tournament between the winners of each city.
The dissemination step of the project is represented by the fact that it is not only carried on at a local or regional level, but, the winning class of the national final is appointed UNICEF ambassador.
This event promotes an ethical approach to the sport by offering a competitive phase itself, but also a time of reflection on the competition. The choice of the ultimate prize for the winners, become ambassadors UNICEF, is surely an important message in this direction.
