CASE STUDY

The Context:
I started gymnastics when I was three and it has been my passion after a few years. I did not like this sport at first, but my parents and my coach encouraged me. After that short phase, I started to love it and to do competitions. My family helped me a great deal to evolve in gymnastics, they were always there to drive me to the training and support me during competitions.
I think sport improves relationships with others, even though I have practiced an individual sport. Training together and helping each other while training or supporting each other during competitions improve relationships with others and create links.
The infrastructures in my school were not really appropriate but we took the bus to have lessons in better gyms.
I think physical education at school is very important and makes it possible for young people to practice at least some sport during the week, for those who don’t outside school.
I feel we have many possibilities to practice sport in our country, we have infrastructures for many different sports but we do not receive enough support (apart from football players).
Balancing Sport and Education:
I practice fifteen hours a week. I used to do fifteen hours of gymnastics per week when I went to school, but now I go to university in physical education, I still do fifteen hours of sport during the week, but the sports are more varied. Apart from my days of classes, I dedicate about 1h30 per day to studying.
In gymnastics, I have participated several times in the Belgian Championships in Division 2, I also did competitions in France.
I have always passed everything at school, I have never repeated or has to retake exams. I am conscientious and work ahead of time for school as much as I can in order to be able to go to all my training sessions.
Thanks to sport, I learnt very young to be organized and efficient in my studies. I have always done my best to finish my assignments before going to gymnastics. I have sometimes had difficulties managing everything at the same time, but in the end sport had a positive impact on my school studies. I do not think I could have done better without my activity.
I always get organised at best to combine sport and school. I worked directly after school then I trained and when I got back home I finished my work. I studied a lot ahead of time during the weekend in order to make it easier during the week. When I had really too much work, I left gymnastics a little earlier to be in order for school.
I think I can succeed in the two fields, you need to be organised and focussed when you undertake something. Less working time but more concentration.
Future Perspectives:
My projects for the future: I am beginning my studies in physical education in order to continue sport and teach in the future. I still do gymnastics but I have reduced the number of practices per week because I do not live near my club. I will still do competitions, but at a bit lower level.
