Description of the initiatives:
Institut Sainte-Marie in Huy, general and technical secondary school.

In 2010, three teachers developed the project to reach Santiago de Compostela. “…We needed a project for third year students, we chose a physical, social and somehow spiritual challenge.
The goal was to involve third year students, year after year, to eventually achieve the 1,300 km between Huy and Santiago de Compostela.

At the time, the teachers were not sure to go through with the project: “We will see after the experience of this first trek. We are not sure to start again next year. This year is a test. We will see the scope it will take. Depending on the students’ feeling, we may adapt the project next year”.

In April 2010, twenty-nine third year students (15 years old) walk from the school to Corbion, at the French boarder, 147 km in 5 days (6 – 7 hour walk). This is the first step of the project.

Students participated voluntarily. “Twenty-nine students who accept to give up part of their holiday, this is good, and it is an ideal number to foster interactions within the group”, according to the teachers.
The 15 to 25 km per day programme had been prepared since January, with monthly training to get used to the trekking shoes and backpacks.

The trek went on the following years. In 2015, 45 students and teachers of that school travelled to France for another five day trek (120 kilometres between Apremont-sur-Allier in the department Cher and La Châtre in Indre).

Evaluation after six years :
Students take on the adventure voluntarily and commit to follow a preparation programme with three ADEPS* and two others in group.
We do not impose any particular rhythm. The group choses for itself. It is not always easy. But we notice children automatically help each other. Then, they think while walking. If before participating, the project is merely a few days walk with friends, they understand its meaning when they come back”.
As for the objective to reach Santiago de Compostela, it is already partly achieved. The school has done half of the route, on the French territory.
