promotion of awareness of importance of sport at school level
Description of the initiatives:
The Volleyball Marathon is organised by The Centre of Vocational and Lifelong Learning No 2 where boys and girls aged 16-19 learn in the vocational and technical classes.
The event takes place in the school sports facilities. The games are held in the sports hall and the participants can rest in the provided rooms and have their meals in the nearby buffet. The teachers and other school staff acquire some sponsors which makes it possible to provide all the participants with refreshing meals and rewards.
The Marathon is a regular event held annually in March since 2012.
More than one hundred participants - students, graduates, teachers and school staff- take part in the event.
The Volleyball Marathon starts on Friday at 7pm and lasts continuously till Saturday 12 am. The participants are divided into eight teams. Each team has its name and consists of ten players (students, graduates, teachers and school staff). The teams wear uniform sports outfits and choose a piece of music that motivates them for the competition.
The teams play matches in the peer system (each against each), and then the first four teams compete for the best places. Each team has their own room where they can rest between the games. All the participants are provided with the refreshing meals and beverages. The games are judged by associated referees and the medical care is provided by paramedics. The event is supported by volunteers (teachers, students and school staff) who are responsible for judging, meals, music and technical service. The Marathon is preceded by an artistic part in which some students give a dancing and gymnastics show. The summary of the Marathon is held during the school meeting. The results are announced and all the participants are rewarded.
Apart from the aims mentioned above, the event's objective is to teach the respect, mutual help and teamwork.
The participation in the Volleyball Marathon makes the youth aware that sport is important as it provides them with the opportunity of physical, spiritual and social development.
Sports competition based on rules and regulations of volleyball promotes an ethical approach to rivals in the sport field, respect for the physical effort as well as cooperation in the team so as to gain a common aim. This event promotes a certain sport discipline, gives everybody a chance to experience sport emotions regardless of their ability and skill level.
