CASE STUDY

The Context:
Derrian started playing football when she was 6 years old and competitively at the age of 7 for both her school and for Celtic Tayside. When she moved up to Craigie High School she was also selected for the ‘Football School’ which gave her the opportunity to participate in a training session every day in place of attending one of her other classes. The Football School was for boys and girls throughout S1 and S2. She has played competitive football for her school (S1, S2, S3 and S4-6), Celtic Tayside up to U15s level and for Forfar Farmington Ladies (signing in 2014), where she has played for the U15s level, Development Squad and is now playing in the Premier League. She also has played for Scotland U17 and now plays for the U18s. She has played 5 International games, which has taken her to Finland, Croatia, Portugal and Kazakhstan.

Balancing Sport and Education:
Derrian goes to School and College five days per week. She is studying both Higher (English, Psychology, Geography, Health & Food Technology) qualifications at school and Industry qualifications (NPLQ and Fitness Instructor Level 2) at College. She has previously achieved numerous National qualifications at level 4/5 and a Higher qualification in Physical Education.

Derrian successfully balances the demands of both school/college and football through taking responsibility for her own learning and course work, making sure she completes homework and studying prior to going to her football training - 4 times per week (plus competitive match on a Sunday). When she is playing for the National team, her school support her through allowing her time off and by providing school work prior to travelling. This is then completed through allocated ‘study time’ when she is away. As she is now in S6, she also has catch up periods, whereby she can complete any work that is outstanding or develop her knowledge and understanding through self-directed study.
Future Perspectives:
Derrian is keen to progress onto a degree course and has various pathways that she can take – from direct entry to University through UCAS or through College-University articulation. She is interested in pursuing a career in the Health, Fitness and Exercise Industry whilst continuing to play football at Premier League and International level.
