Description of the initiatives:
The event was organized by a foundation “Fundation with the pomp – help children with leukemia” and “Fundation Bartek Kruczkowski –Organists”. It was held in Gdańsk on 7th of June 2015 (annual event, started in 2014 year).
It was a charity initiative with the aim to collect the funds for the medical equipment for the Department of Pediatric Hematology of Medical University of Gdańsk. The action was performed with the “motto” of the attempt to beat the Guinness Record at collective doing pushups for a minute. The initiative was widely available for people of all age groups, advertised on line on many local websites. It included several extra activities:
1. Cycling marathon which started on 2nd of June in Szczecin, with the route along the Polish coast (Szczecin, Stepnica, Dźwirzyno, Darłowo, Łeba and Gdańsk). The students who participated in the marathon, were accompanied by those who received a heart or liver transplant and blind people on tandems. They promoted transplantation and organ donation as well as healthy lifestyle. The final of the marathon coincided with the “doing pushups event” in Gdańsk.
2. Preventive medical examinations, medical consultations, nutritionist and fitness trainers, registration as a bone marrow donor and a lesson on the first aid
3. Different competitions in the fields related to physical activities as well as the art workshops for children
The charity aim of the initiative was combined with the promotion of physical activity and healthy lifestyle. The family character of the event let many participating young people share fun with the adults: among others- parents, teachers, trainers. It is important to underline the vital role of such type of the events in terms of developing social attitudes of young generation, their sensitivity to other people needs which results in enhancing ethical behavior and building the social capital. It is also a lesson for the youth teaching them the value of taking care of health, belief in joint ventures and providing inspiration for other initiatives.
The attempt to beat the record was not successful, there were over 100 participants while the Guinness record is about 600 people. However, the participants were satisfied because of contributing to the noble goal of the event.
“Great idea to spend this beautiful day. It is a pity that there were not many people, but next the year and I will definitely persuade family and friends”
