Aims:

promotion of an ethical approach to sport
promotion of awareness of importance of sport at school level
Description of the initiatives:
It is a competition of the same type as “Rhéto trophée” (that alternates orienteering and sport activities) in which sixth year students create mixed teams of 4-6 people.
This is the first year this competition is organised, but considering its success, the experience will be repeated every year for sixth year students.
The teams orienteer in Wavre and its surrounding. The students take a selfie when they have reached their objective and go back to school for check.
Once at school, they are directed to the sport activities (indoor or in the schoolyard) in order to gain “bonus time” that will be counted out of the orienteering duration.
Activities:
- Ring toss
- Relay (four students) carrying a big gym mat
- Crossing the hall, the four students move with the help of two small rugs
- 4x25m relay sprint
- Obstacle course in which students carry a Swedish bench on which are placed cones that cannot fall
There is a “live” ranking for each bonus activity and each orienteering course. There is also a “total bonus”, (total orienteering” and “general” live ranking. All is automatic.
Students are evaluated on this trophy thanks to a dynamic table based on the average of each team.
For the sake of efficiency, the activity addresses 10 teams (60 students) simultaneously for a minimum of 2-3 teachers. A teacher at a table takes care of orienteering and writes down all the results. The other two teachers are responsible for the sport activities. Injured students can help too.
The activity was a success, given the students’ enthusiasm during the first two sessions. Feedbacks were very positive “it’s awesome”, “we love it”, “it makes a change” etc…

This initiative meets the following project objectives:

Promotion of awareness of importance of sport at school level
Thanks to this project, we reach our 150 sixth and seventh year students. They successively do orienteering and team physical activities. It is not explicitly said that sport activities are important (we do it all year long), they realise it on their own. Finally, there is a certain personal awareness. Here are some first impressions:

• “I need to quit smoking”
• “God, I need to start running again”
• “I didn’t know effort could be so enjoyable” (Some find themselves late.)
• ...

Of course some students are reluctant, but they played along or were carried by their group’s dynamics. None of the 150 students ended up without a team or cast aside.

Promotion of an ethical approach to sport
Our students makes mixed teams of 4 to 6 people. Many values are conveyed through this project: respect of partners, mutual aid, will development, respect of rules, team work (!), dialogue, etc.

Promotion of all types of sports
The “bonus time” trials can come from different sports or games: shooting, dexterity, speed, jump, strength, moving... Finally, the only limit is the teachers’ imagination. They can even remind all the sports addressed during the year (and more) through the activities, or invent new ones.
François-Xavier Henin (organiser of the project) currently works on dynamic scales for those activities. Ex: if a student reach a given result, they will gain a certain number of minutes. It will make the organiser’s work easier and any activity can be added and there is no need to create a bonus table bonus that depends on the students’ results.
