Description of the initiatives:
This initiative originated in 2003, when physical education teachers received funds to buy circus material. They used this material in their course and observed it worked really well.
The courses are organised with fifth year students, technical option “education agent”.
They are organised in the school gym.
This activity is organised once a year for an initiation to circus techniques module (6-8 weeks).
Every year about sixty 16-18 year-old students participate in this activity.
The main objective is to give students the means and tools to use circus techniques with beneficiaries in difficulty, so as to restore confidence in them and invert the negative spiral they are in.
This objective is reached putting the beneficiaries in situations of success and highlighted qualities.
The enthusiasm prompted by this activity among the students encouraged the organisers to open it to other children. Alongside his courses, Philippe Koch runs a “circus school” accessible to 6-15 year-old pupils.
His testimonial confirms the beneficial effects of this practice on children:
After a few sessions, children manage to walk on a ball although they believed it was impossible in the first lesson. It encourages them for the rest. Same thing goes for the juggling. They quickly manage to juggle three scarfs. So the kid thinks: “I can do something” and it motivates him to train.
They acquire ability in basic movement, coordination. They also learn self-confidence. Circus gives them value depending on their abilities. Thus, when they will have to present something in a stressful situation – an oral exam or, later, a job interview – they will think: “I will try to show my qualities, keeping calm”.
